Neil Young's Living With War

Neil Young has done it again.

Timeless and timely all at the same time.

More words can't really do the new album justice, you're just going to have to listen for yourself.

Not Fade Away

As you can tell from my photos below, I'm in New York.

I walked into the Canal Club around 9:45pm tonight and the show was already going. It was billed as Mickey Hart's Rhythm Devils with Mutaytor and More! It was also a kick-off party to the Green Apple Music Festival happening in New York this weekend.

The "more", as it turns out, was Mike Gordon, Bill Kreutzmann, Steven Perkins and Steve Kimock. Hot.

The extended improvisations were energizing and the band definately was feeling out the groove throughout the night. They busted into several crowd favorites including The Other Ones out of a nice drums with just Mickey and Bobby. Woman are Smarter, Fire on the Mountain and closed the second set with a 2001 with Eumir Deodato(?) into into Not Fade Away.

At the end of the NFA, Mickey lead the entire band through the packed audience and out onto the street for an extended drum circle before taking off into the night.

There were moments tonight. Moments that you realize how powerful and exciting live music can be. Moments where Gordon hits that bass note in just the right way that opens up a universe of possibilties for you. Moments when Kimock takes over and you're so glad he did. Moments when Bill Kreutzmann is almost playing a techno beat and you're wondering what's going on in the wonderful world.

Seeing this convergence on stage tonight reminded me of what happens when you bring amazing musicians together. Synergy and unexpected magic brews over and creates unforgettable and unrepeatable moments in time.

If you're anywhere near New York on Thursday, be sure to make it down to the Theatre at Madison Square Garden for The Jammys. If tonight was any indication of what's to come, this is definately going to be one not to miss and will be filled with brilliant collaborations that you've likely never seen before and just may never again. Although if this year is anything like year's past, these initial combo performances will be just the beginning.

Seeya there...

SpongeCell

My friends have been working on a new type of web-based AJAX calendar called SpongeCell.

Check it out at http://www.spongecell.com

It lets you quickly add and organiez meetings, events, holidays and share them with your friends.

It's very cool, works quickly and is fun to play with.

I'm a personal fan of the "Sponge Suggestions" and only hope that the events I add are sponge worthy.

Enjoy...

Indecision

There is a certain power in making a decision.

You've chosen a path, and you're committed to it. Sure, you can always change your mind later, but for that moment you've set in motion a series of events which will dictate your destiny.

We can spin in debate for hours, days and weeks until we step up and says that this is the way it's going to be. If we never did, we'd never get anything done. Once the decision is made it's then up to other people to decide if they want to support and follow that decision, disagree and fight it or simply remain indecisively passive.

As empowering as the decision process can be it can also be exhausting, intense and intitimating. You're taking on the responsibility of the outcome and if it doesn't go the way you expected, you're the one who caused it. The buck, as they say, stops here.

Of course, they say that there are no wrong decisions. NOT making a decision is also a decision in and of itself. It's crucial to know when to make a quick decision like the right time to merge on the highway vs. when to ponder something much bigger like which car to buy.

Of course nothing can really match our first initial impulse reaction, which is more often than not the correct decision. When all else fails, go with your gut, listen to your heart and make the call. No one will blame you for trying and everyone will wish they had the guts to step out on the limb and do what needs to be done.
