What are you doing for New Years?

As expected, I've been asked that question a lot this month. New Years Eve has traditionally been one of the most exciting nights in live music, ringing in the next run of the calendar with your friends, your favorite band and a lot of balloons (I still have mine from Phish in Boston '96)

This year, there are 678 shows listed on JamBase for 12/31/07.

Me, I'm likely going to see ALO at the Independent on December 29th & 30th, and then hang out with some friends on NYE and listen to some old concerts, reminisce with nostalgic recollections of Gardens, Fleets, Silk Cities and Swamps

So, what are YOU doing on NYE?

David Byrne's theories on the music business

From Wired.com:
We'll always want to use music as part of our social fabric: to congregate at concerts and in bars, even if the sound sucks; to pass music from hand to hand (or via the Internet) as a form of social currency; to build temples where only "our kind of people" can hear music (opera houses and symphony halls); to want to know more about our favorite bards — their love lives, their clothes, their political beliefs. This betrays an eternal urge to have a larger context beyond a piece of plastic. One might say this urge is part of our genetic makeup.
A solid detailed analysis of the types of deals an emerging artist can structure for themselves, as well as a look into where all those pennies go when you buy a CD or download.

The Bliss Business

The music industry is in the Bliss business.

It's entertainment, a different dimension of being, an escape of our daily lives to a place of limitless possibilities, time travel with magicians, epic delight.

Especially when it's really good.

It's all about Trust. Trusting the artist to submit your evening and mind to their craft, the hope that they'll take you 'there', to that place of dreams, joy, excitement, comfort, jubilation, darkness and light.

Turning question marks into exclamation points.

? > !

That's what we're after.
